Designed by artist Linda Wheat, cancer survivor, after countless hours of lying on her back staring at the sterile white ceiling, the Mandeville artist realized the importance of being able to visualize nature and beauty and thereby hope. (See medical research.) She developed the idea of transforming the cold and clinical tiles into a portrait of the sky in order to help other patients endure the uncertainty they experience.
While still an inpatient, she developed a schematic that would allow her to seamlessly air-brush blue and white simulated clouds onto the tiles so that the tiles work together seamlessly no matter how they are installed. She then began airbrushing blue backgrounds and dreamy whispers of clouds on individual ceiling tiles.
