| IN THE NEWS "Healing Ceilings" inspire hope Zaada Bonn, R.N., Covington, LA Letters to the Editor, Times Picayune I want to thank Sheila Stroup for her wonderful columns, particularly the one published April 18 about the cancer survivor artist who was inspired by her ordeal to create Healing Ceilings. I stopped by Lakeview Cancer Treatment Center yesterday after work to take a look, and I was awed. When I saw the beautiful sky ceiling, I got the same feeling I used to get when on a rare clear Seattle morning, I would catch a glimpse of majestic Mount Rainier. It would literally take my breath away. The sky ceiling elicited the same response. As a staff member, visitor and most recently the family member of a terminally ill parent, I have spent a lot of time in cold, nondescript and impersonal medical facilities. Usually the only warmth in these institutions emanates from the humans -- and that's if you're lucky enough to come in contact with one who hasn't lost their compassion and caring. But the magnificent sky ceiling can change all that. Who can say who of us will someday find ourselves lying on a stretcher in a cancer center receiving chemotherapy or radiation? How magnificent it would be in such frightening circumstances to look up and be transported back to those carefree feelings of childhood, when we would lie on the ground, stare into the sky and experience freedom, hope and joy -- the very essence of healing. Linda Wheat has made an arduous journey and returned to make the way for others who followed more tolerable, even pleasant. Thank you Linda from all who may someday walk in your shoes or accompany a loved one who does. |
